Historical evidence cites a white Refosco, also describing its ampelographic characteristics. In the municipality of Tarcento there are scattered vines of “White Refosco” which, however, have nothing in common with what is described in historical texts. A single vine of this variety was identified in 2004 in a historic vineyard of indefinite age in Coia di Tarcento grown on a Friulian pergola. Meanwhile the vine has died. Once multiplied and planted, it showed high productivity, with ripening grapes characterized by good sugar accumulation, sustained acidity and an aromatic and varied content. Benzenoids are the most represented aromas (45%), followed by terpenes (32%). Among the terpenes, noteworthy quantities of linalool and geraniol precursors were found, which then contribute to the aroma of the wine.

The white Refosco wines show a complex and quite intense aromatic set in which citrus notes, dried fruit and aromatic herbs prevail accompanied by minor but very distinct sensations of floral and tropical fruit, all amplified by the decisive acidic component. The captivating aroma combined with the pleasantness in the mouth make this variety particularly suitable for use as a sparkling base or for blending other dry wines.
