Terrano

(sin. REFOSCO D’ISRIA o REFOSCO DAL PEDUNCOLO VERDE)

In the most ancient documents the name Terrano was attributed to local productions and therefore only in recent times can it be attributed to the variety cultivated in the Karst areas.

At the first meeting
you are harsh, rude
and almost wild.
Then suddenly
a strange magic transforms you
and nature explodes in your body
to gratify the soul
with pleasant harmonies
like just an old friend
is able to deliver.

About

In the most ancient documents the name Terrano was attributed to local productions and therefore only in recent times can it be attributed to the variety cultivated in the Karst areas. This variety is mentioned by Di Rovasenda in 1877, and is present in the 1863 wine exhibition in Udine at the agro-horticultural establishment of the Friulian Agricultural Association with the name of Refosco d’Istria. Initially it was thought that Terrano and Refosco dal Peduncolo Rosso were two biotypes of the same variety, and in fact in neighboring Slovenia it is called Refošk. Today this variety is grown only on the red soils of the Italian and Slovenian Karst and in Croatian Istria where it finds its best qualitative expression. Compared to Refosco dal Peduncolo Rosso, a variety with which it shares most of the ampelographic descriptors, it has a larger cluster with much larger berries.

Genetically it shares a parent with Il Refosco dal Peduncolo Rosso and with Marzemino, while other relationships are not known to date.

Terrano wines have a very intense color, with shades between ruby red and purplish red. It stands out above all for the exuberance of its acidity, linked to a high content of lactic acid resulting from malolactic fermentation. The nose reveals the wild fragrances of raspberry, black cherry, black currant and blackberry accompanied by hints of wild berries; the olfactory sensations are also enriched by notes of cloves, juniper berries, nutmeg, rosemary and rhubarb. The olfactory complexity changes in relation to the production area, the harvest period and the enology applied by the individual winemakers. On entering the mouth immediately highlights an acid slap that softens quickly thanks to a low alcohol content, a respectable extract, a good tannic structure and a harmonious taste that is supported by the presence of good minerality.
